Match funding faces a crisis

Pre-pandemic expectations of leveraging public funds are no longer sustainable, says Lorna Wilson

Universities face a bleak financial future. Most institutions are modelling the loss of most of their international students in the coming year due to the coronavirus, opening up a chasm on their balance sheets. 

While much of the discussion around how to respond to this has focused on cost savings, there are significant concerns as to whether institutions will be able to invest for the future. Research is most at risk.
