R&D spending by US academic institutions up 4% in 2021

US colleges and universities spent $89.9 billion on R&D

Academic institutions in the US spent $89.9 billion on R&D in the 2021 financial year, a 4 per cent increase on the previous year’s expenditure, according to official data.

The Higher Education Research and Development Survey, an annual report sponsored by the National Center for Science and Engineering Statistics (NCSES) within the National Science Foundation, provided the 2021 data in December from a census of 910 universities and colleges that award bachelor’s degrees.
