Gender inequality and self-publication ‘common’ in editors

              

Study finds women in academic editorial positions largely under-represented, amid a trend of self-publishing

A study of more than 80,000 editors working on more than 1,000 journals has laid bare the persistent under-representation of women in these vital roles, and shown that worrying ‘self-publication’ remains a problem in the sector.

While 26 per cent of the authors of research papers are women, only 14 per cent of those who edit them are female, and women make up only 8 per cent of editors-in-chief.
