Nicola Sturgeon steps down—what now for universities, Scotland and the UK?

At 11am yesterday, first minister Nicola Sturgeon announced that after more than eight years as Scotland’s leader—to borrow a phrase from striking public sector workers—enough is enough. “I know in my heart it is time to step down,” she told a packed press conference at Bute House, Edinburgh.

Politicians come and go, especially these days when we have had more Westminster education secretaries in the past 12 months than Everton managers. But the similarity between the departure of Sturgeon and that of New Zealand premier Jacinda Ardern, who quit last month saying she “no longer has enough in the tank”, is striking.
