Views sought on forthcoming EU space defence strategy

Some activities planned to run under Horizon Europe and European Defence Fund

The EU is seeking public input on the use of space for security and defence, ahead of the publication of a strategy on the topic that is expected to be unveiled in March.

The European Commission said in its explanation for seeking input that Europe is “facing a continuously deteriorating strategic environment” in space, with “several” countries “stepping up the development and deployment of different counterspace capabilities in recent years that disrupt, degrade or damage space systems”.

It said the strategy will propose measures on topics including detecting, understanding and countering space threats, and training the required workforce.

No major financial impact is expected in the 2021-27 budget period, it said, but pilot activities will be run under the EU’s Horizon Europe research and innovation programme, the European Defence Fund and the European space programme.

Input on the strategy is being sought from now until 10 February.
