Open access mandate for NZ business ministry

All new research funded by innovation and employment ministry to be made freely available

New Zealand’s ministry of business innovation and employment (MBIE) has been given a mandate to ensure that all research funded by it is made freely available in an open access format.

The move, formally announced on 23 November, will apply to all calls for proposals from 1 January 2023. The decision was first made public by the country’s science minister Ayesha Verrall at an event on 22 November.
