Programme giving money and independence to young researchers suggests stagnant careers could drive scientists abroad

A Chinese programme to entice expatriate researchers into returning home by providing generous funding and large teams has successfully recruited significant scientific talent, according to a new analysis.

The researchers behind the analysis say it could be informative for other nations seeking to lure top scientists from abroad or prevent their own leading researchers from leaving. They say young researchers facing struggles to win funding and independence in traditional research powerhouses such as the US may be driven into the arms of talent programmes such as China’s.
